Balance

Maintaining a visual balance can be counter-intuitive to the newbie graphic designer. Take a look at what Yahoo does, for instance.

The top is balanced by the centering of the logo, and then three round icons on each side, and then the centered search field. Pretty easy.

But what about underneath?

The column division I've marked A is not the same width on each side! Column division B is, down below, so how do they get away with it?

The answer: COLOR.

The left side of A has more white background -- a lot more. The right side has that light blue background, and it looks like denser text, too. The colored background is "heavier" than the white background, so it doesn't need to be as wide.

Consider this altered version, with the two columns made equal in width. It isn't that bad, but the right side is definitely "heavier" now -- your eye is drawn there first, overall.

(Well, the Yahoo Travel ad on the left is the most prominent, but on a whole, I find myself leaning to the right.)

Look at big, successful sites, and see how they balance text with images, images with blank space, and blank space with color.
