Alignment
Question: When is it okay to center my text?
Answer: Step away from the computer.
If you want to abandon graphic web design entirely, just center your whole page
and leave it be. Want a quick way to determine that a website is home-grown
and not professionally made? Look at the alignment.
|
BAD:
Centering your text is for bad people. While it creates a sort of
balance, it's just unnerving to look at, like at any second the text is
going to fall to the side.

BAD:
Centering an image, and keeping your text left-aligned, is much better,
but note that the horizontal rule in this design adds a contrasting third
alignment.

BAD:
Okay, everything has been left-aligned, but without making sure they
all share the same alignment. This can result from blank space around
images, table padding, or just laziness.

GOOD:
By putting everything in one table we can make everything left-aligned.
It might seem boring so far, but alignment isn't the place to show your
creativity.
This could be improved upon, though, by correcting the vertical alignment
of the title text. |

GOOD:
You really want that top logo centered, eh? Fine. But everything
underneath better be left-aligned! If you have multiple columns underneath,
they should all be left-aligned.
